Disclaimer: These are the results from my own personal experience. Your experience may be a little different. Some actions may not be necessary for an installation of a certificate. These are simply the steps that I took to install my certificate, and it worked. The versions at the time of install were as follows: Mac OS X 10.3.4 and Entourage 2004 (no updates).
To install a digital ID, you first have to purchase a certificate. These vary in price from being free to costing about $15 USD, maybe more.
Microsoft has information on where to obtain your digital ID here.
I bought mine from Verisign from this page here. These instructions are based on the results of installing a certificate purchased from Verisign. The instructions should still apply to others. I just don't know the results of how the certificate will appear on your desktop after downloading from another supplier.
Once you purchase your certificate, and you download it, Keychain Access automatically opens up and asks if you want to import the certificate "sophia.exe.p7s." It also deposits sophia.exe.p7s onto your desktop.
After you have imported this file, you will need to double click on it as many times as you have keychains. It might not be necessary to have this certificate in all the keychains, but it can't hurt anything, and it would not work for me until I had them installed in 3 separate keychains (user, System, and Microsoft_Intermediate_Certificates). At the time I installed, there were only 3 keychains. Now there appears to be a 4th one called Microsoft_Entity_Certificates.
How many keychains do you have? In your Utilities folder (contained within your Applications folder) is your Keychain Access program. Run this program, and click on the "Show Keychains" icon in the upper right hand corner. A drawer will slide out, showing all of your keychains.
When you double click the file you will be presented with the following import window:
The default window shows the user keychain, as a pull-down menu. Click on the "OK" button, and repeat the same procedure as many times as you have keychains, each time selecting a different keychain, until they all have the imported certificate.
Your Certificate should now be fully installed on your OS. To get Entourage 2004 to use it, continue on to page 2.
