Disclaimer: This is one way to handle a return receipt. You may prefer to handle it in a different way. Also, this was done in Entourage 2004. Instructions for Entourage v.X should be the same, but some of the menu options may differ.
Can Entourage handle return receipts and requests for return receipts out of the box? The short answer is no, but you can work around this. You can argue all day long about the reasons why Entourage should or shouldn't come with support for return receipts built in, but the bottom line is - it doesn't. If you want to be notified when someone has requested a return receipt from you then create the following rule.
Select Rules from the Tools menu. The Rules window opens.
Select the appropriate tab for the type of email account you are going to use. In my case, it's Mail (POP). Click on the New button. Create the rule using the following information.
If
Specific header Disposition-Notification-To Exists
Then
Display dialog Display message...
Reply Reply text...Check the Enabled box.
Check the Do not apply other rules to messages that meet these criteria box if you wish.
Your Display message is totally up to you. It will be the message that you want given to yourself when any e-mail that you receive has the request for a return receipt in it. Here is mine:
A Return Receipt was requested.
Your Reply text should say something like this:
This is a Return Receipt for the mail that you sent to Your Name <email@address.com>.
Note: This Return Receipt only acknowledges that the message was received. There is no guarantee that the recipient has read or understood the message contents.
Here is what the rule window should look like:
Click OK. Close out the Rules window.
You will now be notified when you receive a return receipt, and whoever requested
it will receive the proper reply. To set up Entourage to request a return receipt,
go on to page 2.
