I’m on my “summer schedule” where I take every Wednesday off. It’s pretty nice, not working more than 2 days at a time. Hurricane Dolly finally made its way up here, and mixed with another system that came down from the northwest, and together they dumped down some serious rain on us. All weekend long. Maybe it will clear up enough to ride the motorcycle to work tomorrow. I’m still waiting for a couple more motorcycle parts to make their way to Barnett’s. I was pretty sure they’d be in by this weekend. Maybe next.
I’m loving the updated iPhone software and currently use (or am trying out in some cases) 17 3rd party applications. I’d have to say my favorite 3rd party app has to be NetNewsWire. The news junkie that I am, it really comes in handy. I seem to have problems updating these 3rd party applications though. Apple’s software update mechanism for these applications seems to be broke. iTunes will tell me an update is available for application X, and download it, but will not update the one on the iPhone. Sometimes a new version of an application will come out but iTunes will not acknowledge that the new one exists. That doesn’t put me too far out though. I can still delete both (iPhone and iTunes versions) and re-download the application and get the new one that way.
Every once in a while, you come across some news article so… sick…. it makes you hurl on your keyboard. You have to ask yourself, “What the freak?”

I’m on my summer schedule now, where I take off every Wednesday. That turns out to be a pretty sweet deal. I never work more than 2 days before I have 1 or 2 days off. Today it rained practically all day. Maybe the weather will be cleared up for some quality riding over the weekend.
OK… So I said I’d let you know what was going on, and here it is. I was waiting to post anything about it here until after my son arrived for the year – I wanted it to be a surprise; and it was.
The big secret is my new 2008 Harley-Davidson Sportster Custom. What a beautiful machine! I take it in for it’s first 1000 mile service tomorrow. You see it chained to my Firebird above. I bought it from Barnett Harley-Davidson.
You know, I live less than two miles from where I work. Driving the Firebird to work, then back home for lunch, then back to work after lunch, and then finally back home just seems like a waste with gas hovering at $4 per gallon. I never thought I’d get another motorcycle, but that kind of got me thinking. I could get a bike and get 50 MPG as opposed to my current 20-25 MPG. I’d fill up every 2 weeks for $10-12 instead of every 2 weeks at $30-40.
So I started checking out the bikes. My last one was a 1985 Kawasaki Vulcan. Nice bike, but it made me think of things I would rather have next time; like a belt drive and choke-less fuel injection. I’m a cruiser guy, I’ve rode crotch rockets and I’d rather sit on a cruiser any day. Once I started adding everything I wanted on my bike (namely the bigger motor, belt drive, and fuel injection) the price came within a few grand of a Harley-Davidson Sportster. So I opted for the Harley.
The local HOG Chapter rides every Sunday to different locations. I’ve ridden on a few road trips with them. One was to Cloudcroft and Ruidoso, New Mexico. It’s been pretty fun, and now you can see what’s been eating up my time.
Have you heard about many of our bees just up and disappearing? They simply vanish, threatening many of our crops. And honey. And ice cream. Perhaps here’s about 60,000 of them? Speaking of ice cream, I have to doubt the intentions of any man driving an ice cream truck around children who refers to himself as Mr. Ding-A-Ling. What’s wrong with people?
It’s getting to be the dog days of summer. Here in El Paso, that’s where we surpass 100 degrees for some ungodly amount of days straight. Like 99 days of triple digit heat. Here’s a peek at today and the next 6 days’ temperatures: 105, 106, 105, 105, 104, 101. Notice a trend there?
Man. Has it been that long since I’ve posted here? Guess so. Couple of months anyways eh?
Oh well… Been having too much fun I guess. Between then and now I’ve come up with some things to post, but after I wrote them I failed to find the motivation or time to actually post the article in between all my leisurely activities. But more on them later. Perhaps next month. Then all will be clear.
What about the new iPhone? Faster. Longer battery (usage, not length). Less money. Wait, lets go back to that faster part. 3G it seems. Bad part of it is, there is no 3G in my area so getting it would not net me any faster internet. Then there’s the whole black plastic piece. I don’t like it. I figure I could get used to it if I had; but I don’t have to just yet. I’m still perfectly happy using my original iPhone. It will get all the software improvements of the new iPhone once Apple releases the updated software. I really love the look of mine though – the matte aluminum back. You see that and you now immediately (if you are in the know) that it is an iPhone. You see something all black, it could be one of a hundred different phones out there.
For this geek, I’ll be thrilled when my version 2 iPhone software gets delivered to me. More so than getting one of the new iPhones themselves. I’m also looking forward to the 3rd party apps that will be available soon.
I was disappointed at the features that seem like they should be delivered with version 2 but will not be as far as I can tell: copy/paste and MMS to list the main culprits. Don’t get me wrong, I still wouldn’t go back to my Palms or Windows immobile devices, but I would like to see those two features on my iPhone. Are you listening Steve?
